About Vukuzenzele, a serious game by ReBlok (Pty) Ltd
ReBlok is a for-profit social enterprise that creates innovative community planning and engagement solutions in the context of in-situ informal-settlement upgrading, a top priority in addressing South Africa’s housing challenges.
The company was founded by iKhayalami, an NGO working in informal-settlement upgrading, and Renderheads, an interactive-software company. The flagship product is Vukuzenzele, a collaborative game-based tool centred on a digital reconfiguration of shacks in situ into a more rationalised layout to facilitate a deep and meaningful participatory planning process.
Acknowledgements
ReBlok received seed funding to develop Vukuzenzele through the Serious About Games challenge in 2017/18, an initiative of Western Cape Department of Economic Development and Tourism (DEDAT) with core partners the Cape Innovation and Technology Initiative (CiTi), Interactive Entertainment South Africa (IESA), 67 Games, and the Craft and Design Institute (CDI).
Sixteen teams entered the competition, and four were chosen to develop a prototype and present their playable game to a judging panel including WITS game-design lecturer Hanli Geyser, international game developer Veve Jaffer, start-up consultant Alex Fraser, gaming-industry lawyer Nicholas Hall, and Olivia Dyers and Bianca Mpahlaza-Schiff of DEDAT.
Vukuzenzele was the winning prototype, and hence the above partners are acknowledged for the grant investment in start-up phases of the company.
